Essence of the Technique: Utilising the traditional Japanese abacus (soroban), mental arithmetic starts with simple numbers and gradually progresses to complex calculations. This method not only teaches how to calculate quickly but also how to visualise the abacus mentally, enhancing memory retention through imagery.
Abacus and Mental Calculation from Day One: Unlike other schools, our teaching begins with both the physical abacus and mental visualisation techniques right from the start. This dual approach not only familiarizes children with the traditional tool but also enhances their ability to perform calculations mentally, which is the core of developing their cognitive abilities.
We incorporate a series of additional tasks and challenges that are specifically designed to boost cognitive functions. These include memory exercises and dual-task challenges where students practice calculations while engaging in a secondary activity like reciting poetry or singing, which improves their concentration and multitasking skills.
Our curriculum includes specialised techniques to enhance memory. By using repetitive and incremental challenges, we help students not just to remember numbers but to visualise and manipulate them in their mind’s eye, which is crucial for advanced mental arithmetic.

Scientific research has shown that mental arithmetic and abacus training can have significant positive effects on the brain. These effects are particularly noticeable in the areas of cognitive development and brain function.
One study using functional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS) explored how arithmetic processing changes in adolescents over a year. The results highlighted changes in brain activation patterns that indicate a developmental shift in the neural strategies employed during arithmetic tasks, supporting the cognitive benefits of sustained mental arithmetic practice (BioMed Central).
Another study found that brain activation during arithmetic tasks was linked to better performance in high school mathematics, suggesting that the brain regions activated during these tasks play a crucial role in mathematical abilities.
